TSMC to build 1nm chip factory in northern Taiwan

Taiwan’s TSMC, the world’s largest custom chip manufacturer, is planning to build a new 1nm chip factory, the Commercial Times reported on October 31, citing its sources.

The factory will be built in an area managed by the Hsinchu Science Park in Taoyuan. The support from the park and the fact that the company already has chip manufacturing, packaging and testing facilities in the area make the Lontan area an excellent location for the company’s most advanced facility.

Recall that TSMC intends to start mass production of chips using the most modern 3 nm technology at the moment in the fourth quarter of this year. Next year it will bring the company 4-6% of revenue. Production on the second generation 3 nm technology is due to start in 2023.

The next 2nm technology is to be mass-produced by the company in 2025 directly in Hsinchu in the Baoshan area. The new technology will increase computing speed by 10-15% and power consumption of chips by 25-30% compared to 3nm technology.
