Taiwanese company TSMC will produce advanced microchips at a US plant

Based in Taiwan, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), will manufacture advanced microchips in the 4 nanometer category at a facility in the US state of Arizona, which is scheduled to be operational in 2024. This was reported on Thursday by the Bloomberg agency, citing sources.

According to them, it was originally planned that the plant, which will appear in the district of Phoenix, will produce 5-nanometer semiconductors, that is, less advanced than now. More advanced microchips have been asked to be produced by Taiwanese tech giant Apple (Apple) and by the GPU firms Nvidia (Envidia) and AMD (AMD) that are collaborating with it.

TSMC is due to announce its plan to produce more advanced technology next Tuesday at an event in Phoenix that will be attended by US President Joe Biden, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, and technology company representatives.

Agency sources indicate that TSMC intends to build another facility in the United States, and there to produce even more advanced, 3-nanometer chips. The Taiwanese manufacturer previously said it plans to produce 20,000 semiconductors per month at the Arizona plant, but could increase output after plans are revised, the sources said.

The President of the United States in early August signed a law on the allocation of support, estimated at $ 280 billion, to the development of semiconductor production in the country. Observers note that during her visit to Taiwan, despite serious warnings from official Beijing, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi discussed the possibility of transferring chip production to the United States. Taiwan-based TSMC is building a plant in Arizona and is considering expanding the project, according to US media reports. The investment is expected to be approximately $12 billion.
