China has blocked imports of citrus fruits, fish and other foodstuffs from Taiwan. This decision of Beijing was a response to the visit to Taipei of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
At the same time, as noted by AP, Beijing has not blocked the supply of technology and manufacturing.
The parties have no official relationship other than multi-billion dollar business ties. This is especially true for the export of Taiwanese-made processor chips needed by Chinese factories to assemble smartphones and other electronics.
Last year, bilateral trade rose 26% to $328.3 billion. Taiwan, which produces half of the world’s processors and has technology that China cannot match, said sales to Chinese factories rose 24.4% to $104.3 billion.
The website of Chinese customs noted that the status of the import of goods has been changed to “suspended”.
Fruit, fish and other foods make up a small part of Taiwan’s exports to China, but the ban hurts regions seen as supporters of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen.
